The Wilton High Hockey team had its most successful season ever in 1986. The team finished with a 14-7 record, making the FCIAC playoffs for the first time ever and States for the first time since 1982. Not too bad for a team predicted to do nothing this season. This year’s team featured record breaking scoring from senior Hal Hyatt, and incredible goaltending from senior Him Helmig. The offense kept a sizzling pace with Greg Voros, Ian Evans, and Jason Levy leading the way, while the defense was held together by Jim Morgan, Sean Lyon and Craig Stephenson. The most tangible accomplishment if the year, was winning the Christmas break tournament held at Darien. The warriors swept all three games to win the tournament, which included a large trophy. A game that exemplified the season was a 6-1 win over Cheshire marking the first time a Wilton team has done so. The icemen’s impeccable play in all phases of the game, kept Cheshire, a perennial state power, in check the whole game.
